This is Volume 8 of Masaaki Suzuki’s exploration of Bach’s secular cantatas. Bach’s assembled secular cantatas are little like the United States Treasury’s National Parks quarters. Individually the new quarters are just as handsome and valuable as the states quarters, but they don’t generate nearly the same interest for collectors. Much the same, I suspect, may be said for the secular cantata series, following, as it does, Suzuki’s epic sacred cantata edition. There’s no credible evidence that Bach was less diligent in composing these cantatas, and the same can be said for Suzuki in performing them.

In these cantatas Bach was able to go all out—triple trumpets and oboes, kettle drums, the works—and set happy texts. Happily, non-German speakers have the ability to ignore those obsequious words by ignoring the translations in the booklet. Good news all around. Suzuki’s performances, and his soloists, as expected, are top-notch. And there is still more to come.
