    For their first Harmonia Mundi
recording, Le Caravanserail and conductor-harpsichordist Bertrand Cuiller
explore the world of the London theater of the 17th Century. We hear airs,
incidental music, dances, and inventive melodies combining the English
tradition and French and Italian innovations. Soprano Rachel Redmond is the
soloist in most of the selections. Sounding a lot like Emma Kirkby (remember
her?), but with more personality, she is theatrical, bouyant, and just plain
lovely. Her diction is excellent, especially given the rather knotty texts
she’s required to sing. Le Caravanserail is an excellent group. The
music-making here is sometimes a little on the polite side; I could imagine
a bawdier take on some of these songs, but Cuiller leads a lively, varied
program. The sound is excellent— atmospheric and warm. | |
