Brewer This is a rearranged reissue of a recording issued in 1995 under the title of “Le Chant de la Jerusalem des Terres Froides” (K617 52), a reference to the parish of Notre-Dame de Quebec which was known as “the Jerusalem of the Frigid Lands”. It is an anthology of 17th Century sacred music from Nouvelle France. On the reissue the emphasis is on the nine selections from the Office of the Blessed Sacrament with texts written in the Abenakis language—these are moved to the first nine tracks. There are a number of selections from the so-called “Livre d’Orgue de Montreal”, played on a 17th Century organ at the Church of Saint Didier in Villiers-le-Bel, and two motets for soprano and continuo by Nicolas Lebegue (‘Salve Regina’ and ‘Regina Coeli’). The singers of the Studio de Musique Ancienne sing two selections in the unique chant dialect used in France, the plain-chant musical found in manuscripts that were brought to the New World by the French missionaries, and selections from a Mass by Henri Fremart, published in Paris in 1642. The largest work is a complete polyphonic Mass by Artus Aux-Cousteaux (after 1590- 1656), published in Paris in 1647. If not for the preservation of the unique copy of this publication in the New World, the works of this composer would have been lost. This recording is also another document of the quality of this ensemble under their founding director, Christopher Jackson, and of his mission to record unknown repertoire. The reissue has a new booklet, but it is missing the extensive historical note supplied by Elisabeth Gallat-Morin for the original release, which has been replaced by a very good, but much more condensed essay by François Filiatrault. The greatest disappointment is that neither the original release nor this reissue include texts and translation, not even of the Abenakis songs. Yet, even so, this is an essential recording for any collector, both for the quality of its performances, and as a significant sonic window into the European musical culture brought to North America in the 17th Century. | |
