I last reviewed lutenist Nigel North in one of a series of Dowland solo recordings he was making for Naxos. I admired his third volume of that project. Now we find him on another label recording Dowland’s most sober work, Lachrimae, or Seaven Teares. Like others before him, North lightens the path by interspersing other numbers, sometimes for solo lute. In this case the collection begins with Capitaine Piper his Galiard. Captain Piper hardly sounds like a wild man, at least in this version that begins for lute and solo viol. The playing is graceful, lovely really, and the sound is filled out unexpectedly by the rest of the consort after what turns out to be an introduction. Then comes the first of the Lachrimae proper, here played expressively with little swells mid-phrase. Of course the problem with the piece is the emotional similarity of the “teares.” Dowland himself hears “sighing” tears and finally “true tears.” I am therefore thankful for the upbeat M. George Whitebread his Almand, with its spirited conversational arrangement. As many of my colleagues have attested, Les Voix humaines is an excellent group for Dowland and for other composers as well. North is one of the most distinguished lutenists. There is of course competition: For me, it comes most tellingly from Elizabeth Kenny, from Jordi Savall with Hesperion, and from the Rose Consort.
