This inspiring program is worthy to join the outstanding Scheidemann
recordings by Rassam and Dirksen (see M/J 2018). Most of Moulin’s seven
Scheidemann pieces were not recorded by either of them. Scheidt’s music (32
minutes here) is in a similar style—both of these composers were students of
Sweelinck. Some of the popular tunes here will be familiar if you know the
contemporary settings by English composers. Moulin captures the different
expressive characters of the pieces well, playing with fluency and
imagination. He understands the rare art of guiding a listener subtly
through several layers of a composi-tion simultaneously. His single-manual
harpsichord has beautiful tone and perfect intonation (in meantone). The
booklet says this album launches Ricercar’s new series of 17th Century
German
harpsichord repertoire. Bravo! | |
