At the beginning of the 17th
Century, the members of the violin family rose to prominence and composers
supplied an expanding repertoire of music. While the solo sonatas that
demonstrate the increasing awareness of the violin’s virtuosic potential
have often been recorded, this new release includes samples from a
significant group of early compositions requiring several violins in
    ensemble.
    reflected in the works for
four violins and continuo by Salomone Rossi, Dario Castello, Marco Uccelini,
and Biagio Marini, there are also selections for three violins, including
pieces by Giovanni Gabrielli and Giovanni Fontana, a trio sonata by
Francesco Cavalli, and two works for solo violin and continuo by Marini.
Catherine Moore in her review of the same ensemble’s recording of music by Giovanni Legrenzi (Jan/Feb 2017), which included three compositions for four violins and continuo, noted that “Clematis is very adept at expressing all the nuance and range that Legrenzi’s music inspires.” That same care is evident on this new recording. There is some overlap with an earlier collection of music for three violins (Nov/Dec 1994: 238), but this new release demonstrates that modern players have learned to draw out rich and sensuous sonorities from their instruments. | |
