Issé by André-Cardinal Destouches (1672-1749) was termed a pastorale heroesque (a heroic pastoral) because its subject, based on Ovid, was the amorous relations between mythical shepherds and the gods of Olympus. It was commissioned to adorn the wedding of Louis XIV’s grandson, Louis, Duke of Burgundy, and Marie-Adelaide of Savoy in December 1697. Destouches was basically a musical amateur, who had had only three years of composition lessons with André Campra when he composed this work and had just left his regiment, the Black Musketeers, after the siege of Namur. The work was extremely effective and often restaged until its last performance at Versailles in 1773. By 1708 Destouches and his librettist, Antoine Houdar de La Motte, had reworked the three-act original into a full five-act version with prologue for performance at the Opera in Paris. It was further revised in 1724 and published in full score—the source for this recording. Overall, Bestion de Camboulas has crafted a very effective performance. The soloists and chorus are all excellent and respectful of the subtleties in Destouches’s settings of the text. The instrumentalists quite effectively illustrate what Abbé Dubos wrote in 1719, that Destouches had created one of the finest examples of “vraisemblance en symphonie” (verisimilitude in instrumental writing). This is just one of the ways that Destouches influenced later composers, especially Jean-Philippe Rameau. I will note that there are some cuts in the dances and this recording omits the trumpets that are included in the 1724 score. Since it has been over 30 years since the last complete work by Destouches was reviewed in ARG (May/June 1989), this is a most welcome release, and it even includes a full libretto with translation.
