Reviewer: Jerome F. Weber Excerpts: "Adrian Willaert’s greatest work was published by Alfonso d’Este in 1559, five years after he bought the only manuscript from the singer Polissena Pecorina, but most of its contents had been known from performances for nearly two decades. It finally appeared in print with 27 motets and 25 madrigals, the latter recorded complete on these two discs, marking the 450th anniversary of publication". "The six members of the ensemble are joined by an extraordinary countertenor who seems to come back lately in each new batch of discs as the guest of one ensemble or another, all instrumental groups up to now. Like the five men of this ensemble, he began his training at the Regensburg cathedral". "This set, sung with such sensitivity and insight, is a worthy foreshadowing of the anniversary. I hope the motets will follow from the same source. This is highly recommended". |
