The idea here is to hear and compare baroque flutes of three makers and materials: a contemporary instrument made of grenadilla or African blackwood, a porcelain flute from 1760, and an ivory flute from 1760. Solomon tells us that these two are “both very different from the wooden modern copy I play on all my other recordings”. Since the playing brims with imaginative touches and the sound is splendid, this release belongs in any baroque music collection that may value such sensitivity, mastery, and variety. You can also hear an ivory flute played by Douglas Worthen on Musica Omnia 307 (Boismortier, N/D 2010).
