Savall - and the production of records
"A record is not a copy of a concert. It is a quest for
a state of grace, a perfection allowing the music to move across time
without being erdode by it."
In an interview for Diapason (# 467, 02/2000) Alexandre Geoffroy reports
Savall's point of view about the recording process. Savall says: " For
me, it is an indispensable experience, complementary to the concert.
In a concert, the listener communicates directly with a human being
who is performing directly for him and is transmitting sensations,
emotions, images that go well beyond the music. However success
depends on many constraints such the acoustics of the hall or the
attitude of the public: its openness, its availability, its capacity
to experience a musical pleasure, in short the quality of attention
are elements which the artist feels very deeply, even if he does not
see the audience in the semi-darkness of the hall. In fact the
reciprocity is total: if the musician is inspired, he will capture the
attention of the public and in turn, if the audience is responding
well, this will inspire the performer. With the recording process, we
can move away from the constraints of the concert hall: it puts the
listener in an ideal situation, better even than that of the conductor
since the equilibrium between the various sections of the orchestra is
better respecter, and it provides a more precise perception, very
detailes of every musical inflection, of each instrument. It also
allows the musicians to perform in a more detailed manner, more
perfect, to find the eact equilibrium between detail and overall
coherence. In the long process which begins with the search for a
partition and it continued with the formation of an ensemble, the
selection of appropriate instruments and the rehearsals, recording
comes last. It is only then that I can expect going farthest with the
technical aspect and the musical expression. However the search for an
ideal interpretation must come to an end one day: it is a moment which
is both painfull and liberating. Our only hope then is that in a month
or in ten years' time, when listening to the results, we will
again find the emotions and the inspiration which guided us at the
time, with all their animation and spontaneity."
